Illustration Friday-Surprise

Here's my illustration for this week's topic Surprise. I did this ages ago. It's scratchboard. I've got to get back to using scratchboard. It's so much fun to work with.

I like this. It has a nostalgic feeling to it, like an old Nancy Drew mystery.

Scratchboard can be difficult...you've created a marvelous illustration in that medium here. I love the little black cat in particular. :)

Excellent! I love the wonderful contrast between light and dark...and I love anything that has a black cat! Oh...you know, I agree with Cindy...it does sort remind me of a Nancy Drew illo. Nice!

Wow scratchboard, you're brave. One mistake and ...

That's a great piece with the look on her face and the cat looking almost kitten. Then again, maybe that's her old cat that died a year ago. Spooky ;P

In other news I saw you had a link to Elizabeth Dulemba's site. I hung out with her at the last SCBWI conference here in NC. It's a small web!

Wow! Thanks so much for all of your encouraging posts! I guess I should put things up on Illustration Friday more often...nothing like your words of encouragement to give me a huge boost! Part of this image is actually cut off due to the fact that it is quite tall. There is more shadow and dark where the cat is, making it's shadow stretch out behind it, and more light and dark above the figure, but I cut it off in the scanned image.
By the way, you can fix scratchboard errors by adding india ink on top of errors and rescratching it, as long as you don't rescratch it too often.

Beautifully done and so well composed. It's a treat to see a pro at work. One of my favorites so far this week.
